CLASSIFICATION FEATURES: The individuals in this classification control and extinguish fires and protect life and property. They operate and maintain equipment and apparatus as a member of the Department. The individuals in this classification work under the general guidance and direction of a Department Lieutenant.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Responds to fire alarms and other emergencies as dispatched.
Maneuvers and climbs ladders and aerial apparatus to gain access to upper levels of buildings or to assist in the evacuation of individuals from burning structures.
Creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance.
Protects property from smoke and water damage.
Selects hose nozzles and lines and directs streams of water or chemicals onto fire.
Administers emergency medical care.
Communicates with superiors during fire operations.
Performs assigned duties in maintaining apparatus, buildings, equipment, grounds and hydrants.
Performs rescue operations.
Drives and operates Department vehicles and equipment within strict guidelines established by the City.
Maintains regular and consistent attendance.
Conducts fire safety inspections or company fire inspections as assigned.
Attends continuing education programs of instruction drill and weekly training to further knowledge of current techniques used in fire protection and in the use of firefighting equipment and apparatus.
Participates in drills and demonstrations as required by Department policy.
Participates in fire prevention activities to promote general fire safety within the community.
Able to perform the physical demands that include but are not limited to having the physical ability to react quickly in emergency situations and to lift heavy objects or persons sufficient to ambulate and maneuver through buildings and properties in the course of rescue and fire suppression activities. Have the strength and endurance to climb ladders, haul hoses, wear/carry required protective clothing and gear in the course of training or rescue/fire suppression activities and to operate extrication equipment, along with ablity to work in cramped spaces and locations high off of the ground. Able to spend time standing, bending, stooping, crawling, squatting, lifting, kneeling, reaching. Understand the element of personal danger and have the ability to perform in a highly stressful environment.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or possession of a GED.
Meet National Incident Management System requirements as set by the Federal Government and adopted by the City.
Must possess alertness, mechanical aptitude, good judgment, dependability and a strong sense of public service.
License:
Valid driver’s license issued by the state of Ohio and must remain insurable under the City of Medina’s vehicle insurance plan.
Certifications (within one year of hire):
Level II Firefighter
EMT-B
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
• Geography of the City and surrounding jurisdictions; and
• City fire code and other state and local laws and regulations.
Skilled in:
• Observing and directing traffic in the vicinity of an emergency scene;
• Customer service;
• Documenting and recording fire code violations; and
• Reading and writing reports, correspondence and other documents related to Department activities.
Ability to:
• Communicate effectively in writing or orally with co-workers, supervisors and the general public in person or over a telephone or radio;
• Pass a Department physical ability test and annually pass a medical physical exam;
• Operate fire vehicles by both day and night;
• Observe emergency scene activity taking place;
• Work well with others as a member of a team often under stressful or emergency situations; and
• Understand and follow complex oral and written instructions often under stressful or emergency situations.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS:
This position requires that the employee work both indoors and outdoors under extreme environmental conditions that may include smoke, dirt, dust, fumes and poor visibility.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
May be required to work outside normal business hours including weekends, evenings and holidays.
Required Skills:
Resident of Medina County
At least 18 years of age
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Ohio Driver’s License with a good driving record
State of Ohio Level II FF & EMT or currently enrolled in programs
Offers of employment will require the successful completion of Background
Check, Drug Screen, Medical Physical and Medina Fire Dept. Physical Agility
Testing.

Starting Pay $23.64 per hour after probation (probation is 12 months)
