Under general supervision, diagnoses, repairs and maintains mechanic, hydraulic, electrical, electronic and related systems of vehicles and equipment; repairs and rebuilds major assemblies and sub-assemblies of internal combustion engines, drive trains, suspension and steering systems, conveyor systems and brake systems; inspects equipment for pending failures and malfunctions during repairs: and performs all other related duties as required. Position is on call 24/7.
Distinguishing characteristics of position are the diversity and uniqueness of repairs encountered and equipment serviced. The duties listed below are intended to illustrate work functions performed by this classification:
Repairs and maintains gasoline and diesel engines; repairs heavy trucks and tractors, front end loaders, graders, pavers and rollers, gradalls, chip spreaders, distributors, bulldozers, hydraulic excavators, backhoes, and other highway construction equipment; diagnoses vehicle and equipment malfunctions and recommends the extent of required repairs;
Inspects, adjusts and repairs clutches, transmissions, universal joints, differentials, steering gears, brakes and related systems, electrical, timing, ignition and charging systems, emergency lights, instrument panels and switches; road tests equipment and vehicles to ensure their proper operation, completeness of repairs and proper functioning of equipment; performs work in a timely, efficient and effective manner;
Uses technical manuals, equipment manuals, schematic diagrams and experience to identify parts needed to achieve repairs; specific skills must include, but not be limited to, ability to overhaul major assemblies such as gasoline and diesel engines, drive trains, brake systems, suspension and steering, electrical and electronic control systems, hydraulic and hydrostatic systems and their components;
Performs maintenance checks and recommends vehicle and equipment repairs based on comments from operators, written and oral;
Uses machine tools, such as grinding machines and flame cutting equipment to fabricate parts for uncommon repairs, welds and flame cuts in the course of work;
Responds to road calls on vehicles and equipment to make immediate on-site evaluations and repairs;
Performs training and communicates instructions on the proper operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment to pertinent employees;
Interacts with other mechanics in all work operations;
Assists in equipment and material unloading and stocking; assists in daily housekeeping of the repair area in the maintenance facility and performs all other job related duties as required.
NECESSARY SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Position requires the ability to independently identify and assess vehicle and equipment malfunctions and cause, and the skill to perform a wide variety of complex and non-repetitive repairs in a timely, efficient and effective manner;
Knowledge of principles, standard practices, methods, tools and shop equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment; knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of a wide variety of automobiles, trucks, tractors, loaders, graders, pavers and rollers, gradalls, chip spreaders, distributors, bulldozers, hydraulic excavators, backhoes, and other highway construction equipment; ability to use various shop equipment and tools; ability to diagnose equipment defects and malfunctions; ability to read, research and understand technical manuals and schematic diagrams; ability to use various computer programs and diagnostic equipment used in the maintenance and repair of all vehicles and equipment;
Knowledge of the use, adjustment and care of test equipment, hand and power tools, overhead crane, hoists and lifts; knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety aspects of the trade;
Ability to select and maintain appropriate tools while keeping pace with changing technology; ability to follow written and oral instructions, establish and maintain effective working relations with those contacted in the course of the work.
Employee is required to work under prevailing weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors; will be in contact with asphalt, chemicals and solvents, concrete, construction equipment, dirt, dust, exhaust fumes, fuels, grease, herbicides, ivy, lubricants, paints, oils, vegetation, weeds, and other construction materials; must be able to lift heavy items up to 100 pounds; position requires stooping, bending, crawling, and working in strained positions; must work in adverse weather conditions; may require constant walking or standing on hard surfaces for duration of the work shift; is required to work various shifts, overtime, weekends, holidays, and is on call 24/7 with a one (1) hour arrival time; must adhere to job specific, local, state and federal environmental regulations when performing duties.
QUALIFICATIONS DESIRABLE FOR EMPLOYMENT
Five years minimum experience working as a full-time mechanic (preferred) where the primary job duties are medium duty truck and/or heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
Basic computer knowledge.
Must be vehicularly insurable under qualifications required by the Medina County Commissioners.
The successful candidate must obtain a Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake Endorsement within 75 days of beginning employment.
Must have full set of necessary tools to perform duties outlined.
